Dao De Jing is the only work of Lao Zi, the founder of the mystical philosophy of Taoism that has been handed down to later generations. Although it contains only just over 5,000 Chinese characters, it had been honored as a treasure of social conduct and government by sages, emperors and officials throughout Chinas history. And various schools of thought in China, including the Confucianists, Legalists, Military Strategists and the Chan sect of Buddhism, all absorbed abundant nourishment from the book. As Zhu Yuanzhang (1328-1398), founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) put it, the book is the root of all things, the mentor of emperors and the treasure of subjects. After being introduced to the West, the Dao De Jing was also highly thought of by great Western thinkers such as Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831) and Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), and it is nowadays regarded worldwide as the greatest classic of Chinese philosophy. In view of the rich historical and cultural contents of the Dao De Jing, and to revive the magnificence of this ancient book, which was originally written on silk, Foreign Languages Press (FLP) cooperated with Hangzhou Goal-Ascend Culture Co., Ltd (HG-ACC) to produce this rare colored-silk edition of the Dao De Jing.

The book reproduces masterpieces of scholarship related to the Dao De Jing, including the Chinese text in the original handwriting of Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322), the leading calligrapher of the Yuan Dynasty, the preface written by Zhu Yuanzhang and the English translation by Lin Yutang (1895-1976), a renowned modern writer. The book also combines two artistic formscalligraphy and paintingand thus is of high value for esthetic appreciation.

Compared with hardback editions popular in previous days, this rare, silk Dao De Jing published by the FLP has two major features as follows: First, it adopted the technique of high-resolution, full-color silk printing, greatly increasing the resolution of colored images printed on silk. With exquisite and lively images, the effect is similar to that of art printing. Second, the book uses high-quality silk for the first time in China, making it feeling soft, smooth, tender and lustrous.

The book has been treated with special techniques to make it mold-, moth- and ultraviolet-proof, ensuring its permanent preservation. It is packaged in a box made of precious tegument covered with graceful brocade, which is uniquely structured and exquisitely shaped, making the whole simple but elegant.

To guarantee its value as a collectors item, the FLP has only published 3,000 sets of this silk version. Each set is numbered.
